Domestic check-in and changes. Mobile boarding passes.

İstanbulkart / İzmirkart

Tap-to-ride public transport. Buy physical card at stations.

Section 10 · Safety & culture

Safety, customs & etiquette

The main risk in Türkiye is overcharging, not violent crime. A little awareness goes a long way.

Staying safe

Taxis

Use BiTaksi or Uber to avoid unmetered overcharging. If hailing, insist on the meter.

Unsolicited guides / "free tours"

Politely decline. Real guides come via your hotel or a licensed booking.

"Come to my friend's bar"

Never follow a stranger to a bar or club — inflated bills, sometimes aggressive.

Shoe-shiner trick

If a brush "drops" near you, keep walking — it leads to a demanded fee.

Bazaar pressure

Carpet/leather/jewelry hard-sells are common. Browse calmly; walking away improves prices.

Demonstrations

Avoid political gatherings. Carry a passport copy. Call 112 in a true emergency.

Mosque & religious etiquette

Dress

Cover shoulders and knees. Women cover hair with a scarf. Scarves usually available at the entrance.

Shoes off

Remove shoes before entering — bags or shelves provided.

Prayer times

Mosques close to tourists during the five daily prayers and Friday midday. Visit between prayers.

Respect

Speak softly, do not walk in front of people praying, silence your phone.

General behavior & warmth

Hospitality

Turks are very hospitable; tea (çay) is often offered. Accepting is friendly, not an obligation to buy.

Greetings

Handshake standard. Try "Merhaba" (hello) and "Teşekkür ederim" (thank you).

Bargaining

Normal in bazaars and with souvenir sellers; not in regular shops or restaurants.

Photos of people

Ask before photographing individuals, especially in villages.

Food, drink & practicalities

Turkish breakfast

A highlight: cheeses, olives, eggs, tomatoes, breads, honey. Hotels do this beautifully.

Must try

Simit, döner, lahmacun, gözleme, baklava, Turkish delight, fresh pomegranate juice. Aegean wine in Urla.

Tea & coffee

Turkish tea and coffee are everywhere; try salep in cool weather.

Water

Drink bottled water; cheap and everywhere. Avoid tap water for drinking.

Currency

Turkish Lira. Cards almost everywhere; carry cash for markets, cafes, tips. Decline ATM currency-conversion offers.

Tipping

Round up taxis; ≈ 10% in restaurants if service not included; small tip for hotel staff and guides.

Electricity

220V, European two-pin plugs (Type C/F). Bring a US-to-Europe adapter.

Language

Turkish. English common in hotels, tours and tourist restaurants; Google Translate bridges the gap.

Health & terrain

Sun and heat

Aegean and Mediterranean sun is strong; hat, sunscreen, water — especially at Ephesus and ancient sites.

Walking surfaces

Old towns have cobblestones and slopes; comfortable shoes matter. Cappadocia valleys and Uçhisar castle are uphill.

Insurance

Travel with medical insurance covering Türkiye. Private hospitals are excellent but expect upfront payment or insurance verification.

Mobility notes

Underground cities involve stooping and narrow stairs; balloon baskets require standing and a step-up.
